I have a loan on my vehicle and the lender has my title. Can I title or register it in Montana?
Yes, but we must have your physical title. Ask your lienholder to send it to us at Flathead County Treasurer, 290 A North Main, Kalispell, MT 59901. A request form is available on the Motor Vehicles page under Forms & Documents, listed as the Lienholder Letter. Print it, fill it out, and send it to your lienholder to request that your physical title be sent to the Treasurer's office.
Do Montana titles require the seller's signature to be notarized?
No. As of October 1, 2025, notarization is no longer required on a Montana title for individuals or businesses. Titles produced after October 1, 2025 no longer include a notary section. Titles produced before that date are accepted without the notary section completed.
When can I register a new or used car I bought from a dealer?
You can register your vehicle once the dealer delivers the title work to our office. If your temporary registration permit is close to expiring and you have not heard from us, contact your dealer to ask about your title work or to extend your temporary permit. You can also check whether your title work has arrived using the Title Paperwork Status Search.
What do I need to renew my vehicle?
Bring your registration receipt, current license plate number, title number, or the vehicle's VIN for the vehicle you want to renew.
What do I need to purchase a 40-day temporary registration permit?
Bring one of the following: a legal bill of sale with an original signature; the title, properly signed off by the previous owner; or your current registration from another state that is in your name, if you are waiting for your title to be mailed to us. A 40-day temporary permit costs $20.09, due at the time of issuance. You may purchase only one temporary registration permit. A legal bill of sale must be signed by the seller and include the vehicle's year, make, model, and vehicle identification number (VIN), along with the name and address of both the seller and the purchaser. A bill of sale form (MV24) is available on the State of Montana motor vehicle forms page, or you can pick up a physical form at the Motor Vehicle office at 290 A North Main, Kalispell, MT 59901.
Do I need an appointment to process my title paperwork?
No. We use a number system. Numbers are in the dispenser next to the information window, the first window inside the building.
Where can I view the available license plates?
Browse the plates available for purchase on the State of Montana's License Plate Lookup.
Where do I get my driver's license?
Driver's licenses are handled by Driver's Services, a State of Montana office and a separate agency from the county. You can reach them at (406) 444-1772. They are located at 1325 Hwy 2 W, Suite E, Kalispell, MT 59901.
