Report Standing Water
Standing water can become mosquito habitat. If you know where standing water is located on your property or in your area, Mosquito Control staff can assess whether it may support mosquito larvae.

What We Do
The Flathead County Mosquito Control Program helps protect public health by monitoring mosquito activity, reducing mosquito habitat, and responding to mosquito-borne disease concerns such as West Nile virus.
The program also works to reduce nuisance mosquitoes that can affect outdoor activities. Staff use integrated pest management practices, which means they focus first on prevention, habitat reduction, and targeted treatment when needed.
Residents play an important role. If you know where standing water is located, especially on your property, Mosquito Control staff can assess whether it may be mosquito habitat and recommend the most appropriate next steps.
How Mosquito Control Works
- Reduce standing water. Staff may recommend removing, dumping, or draining artificial containers and other mosquito habitat.
- Treat mosquito larvae. When habitat is present, larval control is usually more effective and has lower potential impact than treating adult mosquitoes.
- Treat adult mosquitoes only when needed. Adult mosquito treatments may be considered when a mosquito-borne illness is detected or when mosquito numbers exceed program thresholds.
Adult Mosquito Treatment and Beekeepers
Flathead County Mosquito Control respects a property owner’s right to limit chemical treatments around their property. Mosquito Control staff cannot apply treatments to private property without landowner permission.
When adult mosquito treatment is planned, staff will seek permission from landowners in the proposed treatment area and notify residents before treatment. Treatments are also subject to weather and environmental conditions and may not be possible in every area.
Adulticide products can be toxic to bees, fish, and aquatic life if not used according to label directions. Ultra Low Volume treatments applied by truck are conducted in the evening when bees have usually returned to their nests or hives.
